Astrya Richard's first novel, Family
Secrets is about a successful, beautiful
novelist (Starlet St. Morgan) who decides to
research her family tree after watching an Oprah
episode on genealogy. Unfortunately, when
Starlet's research leads her to multiple dead
ends, she hires Derrick Hayden, a handsome private
detective who has successfully solved his last one
hundred and one cases. As Derrick investigates
Starlet's family history, he starts opening doors
that were seemingly meant to be left closed. His
research reveals that Starlet's deceased mother is
not her biological mother and that her death was
no accident. Derrick's investigation uncovers
kidnapping, murder and a high-level, international
government conspiracy.
Our club was a little disappointed that the (back
of the book) leads you to expect more of a true
mystery rather than a suspense/romance novel;
however, we found this book to be a refreshing
break from the normal "drama-filled" fiction. It
has a fairytale like charm in that everyone is
good-looking, Starlet is loved and admired by all,
and a happy conclusion neatly wraps up most of the
loose ends. The story depicts characters with
strong family ties and friendships, themes of
commitment and dedication and wholesome
morals. Overall, we thought Ms. Richard did a good
job for a first time novelist.
The Nubian Circle Book
Club rating of Family Secrets
is a 3.4 stars out of 5.
Note: (It should be noted that as a group
they are not fans of romantic suspense)
